ELECTRONIC tourist information boards are to be removed from the region next month.

Scottish Borders Council bosses have confirmed the interactive screens in Melrose, Tweedbank, Stow and Hawick will be taken down "following a number of issues".

The subject was brought up at Wednesday's meeting of Melrose Community Council.

The town's board, which is located in Market Square, was erected back in 2016.

At the time, community councillors expressed their concerns over the two-metre high gizmo, which took several weeks to connect up to the wi-fi network.

And when it was fixed, it was criticised for being in the wrong place and for not showing enough local information.

Vice chairwoman of the community council said in 2016: "There seems to be an awful lot on it, apart from Melrose.

"We want to show visitors what is on offer here, not other towns.

"Surely this has been constructed in the wrong place. It's been a great deal of trouble at a great deal of expense.

"This box has been put right in the middle of the most photographic part of town."

However Scottish Borders Council have now decided to remove the boards from four Borders communities.

A spokesperson told us: “Following a number of issues with its visitor information screens the council has taken the decision to terminate its contract with the current provider.

"As a result the remaining screens in Hawick, Stow, Melrose and Tweedbank will be removed.

“The council is investigating a range of options, including replacement interactive screens and alternate provision.”
