At last week’s annual general meeting, Galashiels & District Probus Club elected its first female president, Anna Karczewska-Slowikowska.

Anna, a retired chartered psychologist, is the daughter of Polish parents who fought with the British in World War Two, and has lived in Edinburgh and the Borders for 18 years.

She enjoys playing tennis and badminton and is a volunteer at Abbotsford House and with Talking Newspapers for the Blind.

Douglas Hope was elected vice-president and Brian Roberts was re-elected secretary.

Will Roberts was elected treasurer to replaces George Thomas. George, who has been treasurer for a number of years, was bestowed with Honorary Membership of Probus in recognition of his service. The next meeting of the club is on April 11, with the President’s Lunch to be held on April 25 when Rachel Hamilton MSP will be the guest speaker.
