GREGGS has submitted an application to develop a Galashiels eyesore.

The bakery chain is hoping to open a new store at the former Ozkan's Grill takeaway in Market Street.

And if successful, it would have an outdoor seating area for customers.

Over the last few months, the town centre site has been targeted by vandals.

Since the takeaway closed, windows have been smashed and the store front covered with graffiti.

But proposals submitted to Scottish Borders Council this week show Greggs is hoping to give the unit a facelift and would install four tables and 11 chairs in the outdoor seating area.

The chain, which was launched in Newcastle in 1951, has around 1,600 shops nationwide including one in Channel Street.

However, it is not yet clear if that would remain open if the plans were given the go-ahead.

The firm also has stores in Hawick, Kelso and Peebles.

The Border Telegraph has contacted Greggs for comment.
