AN ageing committee is being blamed on the decision to take Selkirk Vintage Rally off the road.

Since 1992 enthusiasts from across the UK have been driving their vintage vehicles to the town every September.

And tens-of-thousands of motoring enthusiasts have parked up to savour the attractions.

What began as a small enthusiasts show behind Selkirk Rugby Club grew to become one of Scotland's biggest vintage rallies after moving to Sunderland Hall

But a decision was reached last week to make the 2019 Selkirk Vintage Rally the last one as committee numbers are down to just a handful.

Gordon Edgar from the Selkirk Vintage Rally committee said: "There are only three or four committee members left and we are all at the stage where we are wanting to retire.

"We've been trying to recruit younger people to come onto the committee but we haven't been able to

"It must be remembered that Selkirk Rally is not a club, there are no club members to help with the running of the rally, it is all done with what is a very small committee and volunteers."

Plans are now being put in place for the final rally, which is held on Sunday, September 16, to be the biggest and best.

Mr Edgar added: "We have had some excellent rallies over the years and we are grateful to landowner Robert Smillie and farmer John Turnbull.

"We would like to thank all the exhibitors, sponsors, volunteers and the wider general public for supporting the rally over the years.

"It's been a great 27 years and we hope to make the final rally as good as any that have gone before."

Entries are already coming in for the 28 different classes at the 2019 Selkirk Vintage Rally.

And there will be a special celebration to mark the centenary of the Fordson tractor.
