A SELKIRK woman's sponsored walk has helped Cancer Research take giant strides towards a cure.

Joyce Wright, with the held of a committee, has been organising an annual fundraising walk in the hills above her hometown since 1988.

And it has now raised over £150,000 for the charity.

On Sunday, a total of 69 walkers completed the trek from Dryhope in Yarrow, over to Traquair and onto the Three Brethren before descending down to Selkirk.

Joyce told us: "The scenic route which follows the Southern Upland Way for the most part is not for the feint hearted, particularly the long uphill section as you leave Traquair.

"However the walkers take it all in their stride with many returning every year to support this worthy cause.

"The committee are indebted to the many people who support the walk including Borders Buses who provided transport to the starting point of the walk, Selkirk Rotary Club for helping out with the marshalling and Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team who continue to support the walk every year and their reassuring presence is always appreciated.

"Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer thanks to the dedication and commitment of volunteers and supporters who help fund our research."

The walk is normally held on the last Sunday of April – if you would like to register an interest in next year’s walk contact Joyce on 0794 778 1675.
