LOCAL hero, Jim Clark OBE, will be remembered in a special lecture at Chirnside community centre this Monday.

Formula One world champion and Indy 500 winner, Jim is still regarded as one of the ‘greatest racing drivers of all time’.

And ahead of the Jim Clark Motorsport Museum opening in Duns this summer, the Chirnside History Society are hosting a talk entitled ‘The Jim Clark Story’.

Live Borders’ Learning and Engagement Officer, Kenneth McLean, will host the talk, giving an overview of Jim Clark’s career, from his early life through amateur racing and on to becoming World Champion, and his untimely death in 1968.

Fans can listen to the talk at the Chirnside Community Centre and browse the display of artefacts and memorabilia from the upcoming museum on Monday, May 20.

Kenneth said: “The life and legacy of Jim Clark are extraordinary and a joy to share with community groups across the Borders.

“Anyone is welcome to come along on the night to explore some fascinating memorabilia, ahead of the museum opening in summer 2019.”

Operated by local charity, Live Borders, the motorsport museum will provide an expanded exhibition space to showcase Jim Clark’s race cars, memorabilia, trophy collection, film footage and interactive displays.

Looking after the £1.6m project is the Scottish Borders Council who have partnered with Live Borders, The Jim Clark Trust and the Jim Clark Memorial Room Trust.

Funding for the project has come from a variety of generous sources including the Council, the National Lottery, Museums Galleries Scotland and The Jim Clark Trust.

And the latter included a grant from the Fallago Environment Fund as well as individual donations from around the world.

To make way for the new museum, the existing Jim Clark Room closed at the end of May 2018.

And now after the redevelopment works, the brand-new museum is scheduled to re-open this summer.

No advance booking required for the lecture taking place at Chirnside Community Centre on Monday May 20 at 7.30pm.

Other community groups are invited to get in touch with Live Borders if they would like Kenneth to lead a talk for them.
