THE SNP's anti-Brexit message came out on top of last week's European elections, both in the Borders and across Scotland.

Nationally, Nicola Sturgeon's party secured just under 38 percent of the vote - an increase of nine percent from the previous Euro count - to take three seats in Brussels.

Nigel Farage's Brexit Party secured one MEP along with both the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives.

Locally, the Scottish National Party was also the winner with 10,761 votes - just over 28 percent - ahead of the Brexit Party with 7,188 votes and the 7,152 votes for the Conservatives.

Despite a resurgence, the Liberal Democrats had to settle for fourth in the Borders with 6,900 votes.

The turn out in the Scottish Borders for Thursday's European Parliamentary Election was 43 percent.

Rob Dickson, Acting Local Returning Officer said: “I’d like to thank all the election staff who made sure that both the poll on Thursday and the count this evening ran smoothly.”
