A NON-STOP week of fun at Tweedbank’s annual fair had villagers and pupils enjoying everything from football to fancy dress.

Starting off the week was the Chris Doyle Football Festival which saw over 200 players from all over the Borders, including organisers Tweedbank Thistle, turn up on May 25.

With the weather just right, the P1-P7 small sided games kicked off at 9.30am.

And finished at noon, where the bacon rolls and coffee were going down a treat.

Parents came along to support their children play football as well as enjoy a face painter, bouncy castle and speed shots.

Saturday night fever ensued as the family disco took place at the Tweedbank community centre.

Convenor Georgina Boggs commented: “Loads of families attended and danced until just after midnight. It was a great success.

“Sunday May 26 saw the return of the Walking Treasure Hunt, a lovely day for nearly 100 people to take a stroll round Tweedbank to find the strategically places treasure hunt clues.

“It was then back to Tweedbank Community Centre to be welcomed back by the Gala Braw Lads Party, along with some pizza and hotdogs.

“We then introduced Robbie Lowrie and Nicola Laing to Tweedbank Principal Party where they exchanged colours and then had time for some hotdogs and sweets.”

Nearly 140 young people appeared to get their eyes down and win some prizes at the Kids Bingo on Monday May 27.

Another great night with shouts of excitement as the children’s bingo calls earned them prizes sponsored by S&S Joinery.

On Tuesday, Tweedbank Early Learners hosted a teddy bears picnic and open day in the community centre.

Due to the weather being not so good this year, everyone was lucky they have a great setting to be indoors.

Following this, it was time for fancy dress night.

Tweedbank Principals welcomed Melrosian Ben Magowan and Harry Fletcher and between them all they judged the categories with great difficulty on Wednesday.

Georgina added: “All the entrants put in lots of effort and the results were amazing, Tweedbank residents are truly inspirational as a village.”

The party then paraded behind the Gala Ex-Service Pipe Band to the community centre where the night carried on to bar, music and BBQ by Tweedbank Thistle.

Thursday brought about the Indoor Bowling Tournament.

Eight teams of four turned up to play and with a set of spectators attending, it was an evening with lots of healthy competition between young and old, novices and professionals.

On Friday, it was time for afternoon tea for the over 50’s with performances by The Riddell Fiddles and their junior members as well as the Ward School of Irish Dancers.

Evening entertainment was Adult Bingo hosted by Pete ad Ian.

To finish up the Fair the Grand Fruit & Flower Parade started at the Community Centre with local groups and families arriving armed with flowers for the Gala Nursing home.

And fruit for the school breakfast club and items for the local foodbank.

They then paraded behind the Melrose Pipes and Drums whilst the Tweedbank Principal Party had the pleasure of being transported by horse and carriage to the Primary School.

Fete and Fun Day followed with many stall holders and community groups fundraising.

During the day, live band Point Blank kept the crowds entertained.

People supported late into the afternoon with the band playing until after 5pm.

Georgina added: “Thanks must go to Tweedbank Guide Group who provided the Teas and Coffees for refreshments, Tweedbank PTA provided the food for the afternoon with burgers and hotdogs, and LIVE Borders provided some entertaining inflatable and sports fun on the pitches by the playpark.

“We then held the P7 penalty Shootout for the Chris Doyle Trophy with our up and coming female goalkeeper for Tweedbank Thistle Cara McCutchison doing the honour of getting fired at by some super-hot shots!

“Gala Harriers Gerry Moss organised the round the pond race at 3pm superbly and had over 30 runners.

“To finish the day off we drew the grand raffle, selling out of our 1000 books with first prize being a Smart Box to choose your own activity break for two people via buyagift.com and many other prizes.

“The weather was just right for a lovely day at the Fair, and it was rounded off with more music before home time!”

“The Tweedbank Fair Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people: the Principal Party – Lad Cammie Chapman, Lass Eilidh Milliken, First Attendants Kyle Fitzgerald and Ranim Alahad, Second Attendants Ellis Brotherston and Sophia Sulo for handling their duties with great big smiles and pride for the whole week.

“And thanks to parents and family of the Principal Party who have supported their children right from the start, Tweedbank Primary School and to all of our sponsors.

“Finally, to the Tweedbank families and friends for supporting all the events and giving great feedback.

“That’s a wrap for #TBF2019”
