EVERY year the first week in June marks Volunteers Week, a time to thank volunteers across the Borders for the fantastic contributions they make.

Almost 300 people volunteer in 40 different volunteer roles within NHS Borders.

Whatever a person’s skills or interests, there is bound to be a volunteer role to match.

Roles include activities like gardening, driving, music or arts.

Berwickshire High School pupils were some of those being thanked for completing the school volunteering programme at the Knoll Hospital.

They were awarded a certificate of achievement for their roles as Community Ward Visitors.

Joanne Forrest, Voluntary Services Manager at NHS Borders, said: “We really do appreciate the time gifted by our volunteers across NHS Borders.

“They support staff and engage with patients and their families.

“One particular role, Patient Feedback Volunteers, allows patients to tell us about their stay in hospital, this feedback is then shared with the relevant areas and our Board Members.

“We also have exciting opportunities within the BGH including our School Programmes together with a whole host of activities in the community.

During the past few years, there has been a remarkable growth in the number of people who volunteer with the NHS, but there are still specific roles which they are keen for more recruits.

People are needed to be Mealtime Volunteers, Volunteer Drivers, Public Members and Healthy Living Network Members.

Joanne added: “Volunteering is two-way, and many volunteers speak of the benefits to themselves as individuals for instance gaining valuable new skills and experience, boosting their confidence and making new friends.

“It can also be rewarding just to know that you are contributing to the wellbeing of Borders people.

“If you would be interested in finding out more please get in touch.”

One of NHS Borders Patient Representative Volunteers echoed Joanne’s comments, by adding: “I find that my role is rewarding, fulfilling, at times humbling but certainly never dull.

“I am always made aware that the staff value my contribution which, to me, is truly uplifting.”
