A 55-year-old woman from Selkirk has been killed in a lightning strike in the Highlands on Saturday.

Isobel Bytautus was with the Linlithgow Ramblers when two of the group were struck near Fort William.

The mum-of-one was pronounced dead at the scene.

Isobel's husband, Andrew, and daughter, Ashley, were being comforted by family and friends.

Ashley said: "My mum died instantly, a freak one in a million accident you never think is possible. 

"I can't imagine life without her, I'm lost."

Another walker from the group was taken to Belford Hospital in Fort William to be treated for her injuries.

Inspector Isla Campbell, Local Area Policing Inspector for Lochaber said “We are grateful for the prompt and professional response from partner agencies to this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the lady’s family.”

Emergency services were called at 5.42pm.

The coastguard helicopter, Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team and Scottish Ambulance service helimed and ambulances were sent to the scene.

The party were traced on Na Gruagaichean in the Mamore Range.
