A 22-year-old man has been arrested following break-ins in Falkirk and Galashiels.

The suspect was tracked down by dog-handlers in fields near Edinburgh.

Police were already on the lookout for an Audi S3 Quattro on Wednesday, following a break-in at Tesco's in Falkirk, when the vehicle was used in a theft from fast-food premises in Channel Street, Galashiels.

A police chase led to the vehicle being abandoned on the Edinburgh City Bypass, near Straiton.

Dog-handlers joined the search of nearby fields and a 22-year-old was apprehended at around 5am this morning.

Superintendent Helen Harrison said: "Tackling acquisitive crime, in particular offences that span across geographical divisions, is one of our top priorities and this arrest was the result of outstanding pursuit work by road policing officers, specialist search activity by our dog unit and vital information from the public.

"Inquiries into these break-ins continue but I want to make it clear that the Lothians and Scottish Borders, and our neighbouring divisions continue to work closely with one another to identify housebreakers and vehicle thieves operating across county lines to bring them to justice.
