THE longest day of the year has never sounded so good.

On Friday, June 21 venues across the country will be hosting Make Music Day.

And this year the Rolling Hills Folk Club near Melrose has signed up and is funding guest band, Skirlie.

Around 1600 events are expected to take place in the UK throughout the Friday with the aim of widening access for local communities to a live musical event.

Skirlie will provide a brilliant night of musical delights.

Living up their name - which may conjure up memories of an interesting traditional dish of oats and onions fried in batter - Skirlie's music is fundamentally Scottish with a few other things thrown in.

The band members are Alison Tunnicliffe on fiddle and vocals, Kev Patrick on guitar, mandolin, dobro, vocals and anything he can make out of wood, string and glue, Rab Ferris on bodhran, percussion, whistle and vocals and Eddie McGlone on bass, Chapman Stick and vocals.

The Rolling Hills Folk Club is held in the Smith Memorial Hall in Darnick.

As always its is a Bring Your Own Bottle event, although Fairtrade tea and coffee are also available, and all ages are welcome.

Ros Anderson from the Rolling Hills Folk Club told us: "Music is a great way to start the weekend for everyone.

"Our venue is the acoustically wonderful Smith Memorial Hall."

Doors open 7.30 for 8pm start.

The legendary raffle will run as usual to help pay for the venue.
