COMMUNITY leaders in Selkirk are encouraging locals to keep-fit by placing iconic stones at 100 metre intervals along a popular riverside walkway.

Concerns had been raised about a set of inscribed stones since they were moved to make way for the town's flood defences.

But they have now come out of storage and are being relaid next to the Ettrick Water.

It is hoped the stones, which feature mottos of the town's ancient incorporations, will now aid joggers.

Selkirkshire councillor Gordon Edgar explained: "The riverside paths between the two foot bridges in Selkirk have become really popular with joggers and runners.

"We felt that it would be a good idea to place the inscribed stones at 100 metre intervals, so that joggers can use them to run 100 metres then walk 100 metres.

"It was always our intention to return the stones to the riverside area - as well as being respectfully situated they now also have a practical purpose for anyone trying to get fit."

Seating which has recently been installed on the far side of the Ettrick is being moved to a different location due to flooding concerns.
