A 28-year-old man has appeared from custody at Selkirk Sheriff Court accused of spitting on two police officers.
Alexander Deans of Earl Street, Hawick, is also charged with threatening or abusive behaviour and repeatedly challenging police officers to fight.
He is also accused of making abusive and offensive comments.
The offences are alleged to have happened in Backdmgate, Hawick, and at Hawick Police Station on Tuesday.
Deans - originally from Manchester - pleaded not guilty to the three charges.
He was granted bail ahead of his trial at Jedburgh Sheriff Court on July 23 with the special condition that he should not be under the influence of alcohol in public and agree to participate in a breathalyser test if requested to do so by police officers.
