BOSSES at Sainsbury's say they will attempt to find positions in other branches for staff affected by the forthcoming closure of their Selkirk store.

The Sainsbury's Local on Selkirk High Street is earmarked for closure in October.

A spokeswoman for the supermarket chain told us: "Our Selkirk Local store will be closing later this year.

"We understand it will be an unsettling time for those affected and we’re working to redeploy as many colleagues as possible.”

Sainsbury's operates one of two small supermarkets in Selkirk.

The news comes just weeks after RP Adam closed with the loss of almost 50 jobs.

Local MP John Lamont hopes a replacement retailer will take on the premises.

He told us: "It is disappointing to hear about any employer leaving our high streets.

"My thoughts are with any staff who might be affected and I'd encourage them to get in touch with me if they need any assistance.

"I urge Sainsbury's to do all it can to minimise the impact on its staff and to try to find a new retailer to take on the premises."
