GIRL Guides from across the Tweed Valley have returned from an adventure-filled trip to Switzerland.

The group of youngsters, aged 12 and 13, took part in a host of activities including hiking, white water rafting and climbing.

And there was also a chance to visit an international Girl Guide centre, ride in the Oeschinensee cable car and travel up to the Jungfraujoch on the highest mountain railway, where they got to go sledging and have snowball fights.

Maisie, who is 12, said: "This trip to Switzerland was my first time abroad and I couldn’t have asked for a better holiday.

"We had such an amazing time and did so many activities such as white water rafting, tobogganing and going up Jungfraujoch.

"We visited 'Our Chalet' and 'Kandersteg' – world centres in Guiding and Scouting.

"I’m so thankful that Girlguiding Scotland gave me this opportunity."

Olivia, also 12, added: "I am so excited and happy to have done this trip as it was a wonderful experience.

"My granny also went to Switzerland with the Guides when she was 13 years old – 59 years ago – so we could compare stories."

The girls worked hard to drum up £6,000 towards to the cost of the trip as well as for the kit required.

They fundraised by bag packing in local stores; washed cars and held bake sales, quiz nights and coffee mornings.

They were also supported by their family and friends, as well as businesses including Iceland, Tesco, Asda, Howdens, Abbey Fine Wines and Reiver Embroideries.

The group’s leader, Kirsteen MacKenzie, said: “It’s so inspiring to see these young women grow in confidence through experiencing new and adventurous activities whilst making friends and lifelong memories.”
