Award-winning Borders musicians will get toes tapping with a fusion performance in Bowden this weekend.

Multi-talented instrumentalists, Paul Chamberlain and Michael Haywood, will be delighting audiences at a concert in Bowden Village Hall on Friday.

With a fresh take on world music Chamberlain & Haywood take their instruments on an international tour of the sultry sounds of the Tango, the rhythmic drive of the Balkans, along with rip-roaring tunes from Russia and Scotland.

A promoter for the band commented: “Virtuoso playing, and fresh musical ideas, Paul and Michael explore the potential of their instruments in a way that is exciting and engaging.

“They take the strength of each instrument’s traditions and blend them into their own unique brand of fusion music. The result is a vibrant, intriguing and occasionally explosive mix of music that crosses cultural boundaries.”

Both musicians grew up in the Borders, and a common interest in traditional music brought them together.

Whilst still maintaining these traditional roots, the combination of Michael's jazz influenced style, and Paul's classical training come together to create a dynamic performance bursting with energy.

Michael gained an honors degree in folk and traditional music from Newcastle University with a major in wind instruments.

Since graduating, he has appeared at leading venues such as the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Sage Gateshead, The Barbican, and he has even played on BBC Radio Scotland.

Now, Michael teaches music locally at Earlston High School.

Paul was one of the first classical accordionists to graduate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, where he graduated with a Master of Music Performance with Distinction.

Whilst studying there he was awarded the acclaimed Governors Recital Prize for Keyboard and was also one of the keyboard section finalists in the 2011 Royal Overseas League competition.

Paul has made appearances at international music festivals such as Baltica Harmonica in St. Petersburg – Russia, Sata-Häme Soi Accordion festival in Ikaalinen – Finland, and the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

And he completed a major national tour of concerts in July 2014 to coincide with his second CD release ‘Accordion Sensations’.

The concert takes place at Bowden Village Hall on Friday, August 16 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £10 for Adults and under 18’s go free.

Chamberlain & Haywood will also be performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival on Sunday August 25.
