A motorist who admitted driving while almost three times the legal alcohol limit has been banned from the road for 14 months at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Thirty eight year old Robert McLeod, of Stonefield Place in Hawick, pleaded guilty to driving with a breath/alcohol count of 58 microgrammes - the legal limit being 22.

The offence happened at the Borders General Hospital car park on October 16 and on the A7 at Ashkirk.

He had initially been charged with driving while almost seven times the legal limit. McLeod was accused of having a breath/alcohol count of 145 microgrammes but put forward a defence of post incident drinking.

Following negotiations between the Crown and McLeod's lawyer, the lower reading of 58 was accepted.

In addition to the disqualification period, McLeod was fined £225.
