ALMOST 450 budding rugby stars of the future pulled on their boots in Peebles last weekend.

The Peebles Piranhas annual tournament on Sunday attracted teams from across the Borders as well Kinross and Stewart's Melville.

The sun-soaked Gytes and Whitestone Park were awash with colour throughout an exciting day's rugby.

George Blair, Peebles Rugby Youth Development Officer, told us: “It’s great to see that junior rugby in Peebles and across the Borders is in good shape.

"We’ve got a great team of coaches who create a fun and inclusive environment for kids to learn the game."

Peebles won their groups at both P7 and P5 levels, with Peebles P4s coming third in their section after a last gasp try and some girl power.

The tournament was supported by several local businesses, including Wood Oven Wonders, Impact Landscapes, Lemon Digital Design, Sainsbury’s and marquee supplier Sandy Smellie.

With just over 150 children now involved in junior rugby in Peebles, the Piranhas club continues to go from strength to strength supported by a great team of coaches, and a consistent approach to developing all players, no matter their ability.

Piranhas coaching convenor Mark Thomson said: “It’s always a real team effort and we’re lucky to have a fantastic group of parents who are willing to help out, whether baking cakes or coaching and refereeing games.

"I’d also like to give a special mention to Yvonne Cameron, a well-known Piranha mum who has helped run the catering side of things over the past 10 years.

"This was Yvonne’s final tournament... we’re going to miss her."
