GET your judging hats on, it's Bake Off time.

Members of the public are invited to judge a charity baking competition in Hawick next week.

Inspired by the Great British Bake-Off, the FirstLight Trust café hub in Hawick will put donations towards their national campaign to raise £4,000 for homeless veterans.

Founder of FirstLight, Dorinda Wolfe Murray says the hubs provide an excellent service to veterans: "We’re here to support all those that served in the armed forces and emergency services.

“This includes finding housing for veterans who are on the streets, or on the verge of being made homeless. Our café hubs help raise money for this work as well as being a place where the public and veterans alike can relax over a cuppa and a slice of home-made cake."

Across the UK café hubs will be putting their best aprons forward and serving up a selection of cakes to be judged with a scorecard on Wednesday September 18th.

In Sharpe's café hub on Hawick High Street, customers are asked to make a £5 suggested donation to receive their tasting platter of cake, a hot drink and their score sheets. Once the votes have all been tallied up, the hub's winner will be announced at 3pm.

The winning 'show stopper' will then bake on through to next stage of voting - a public vote through FirstLight's Twitter and Facebook pages to decide the final UK winner.

Voting is fast as the overall UK winner will be revealed on September 19th.

Dorinda added: “We’d love to have as many tasters as possible judging our cakes.

“From Victoria sponges to chocolate cake, carrot cake to lemon drizzle, we know our Hawick colleagues are already star bakers. So please pop down to see us on 18 September and give us your opinion and vote again through social media for the cake of cakes! We also welcome whatever people can spare to help keep veterans from sleeping rough."

Donations can be made in Sharpe's café hub or you can donate online at https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/preventing-homelessness-for-veterans.
