A FEW Borders superheroes completed the Great North Run last week.

And every step they took of the 13.1 miles course was in aid of a new Bladder Scanner for ward 9 at Borders General Hospital.

A total of 14 Friends of the BGH pulled on their trainers to join the likes of Mo Farrah, Callum Hawkins and Brigid Kosgei on the Newcastle starting line.

Many of them dressed as superheroes, including Spiderman, Captain America and Wonder Women.

A spokesman for Friends of the BGH told us: "We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our incredible runners and to everyone who has sponsored them so far. If anyone would like to make a donation towards the Bladder Scanner."

Among the Friends of the BGH runners were Caroline Reid, Richard Sharp, Carly Raeburn, John Gallagher, Timothy Sporle, Ugo Mbaezue, Claire Griffiths, Claire Irvine, Claire Taddei, Kirsty Nicholson and Katie Smith.

Also running in aid of the Friends of the BGH was local fundraising group the Borders Barmy Army.

The spokesman added: "The Borders Barmy Army did an excellent job supporting our runners throughout the campaign including help and advice with training and fundraising.

"We would like to thank Lee Myers, Liam Myers, Kevin Traill, Jenny Rankine, Roddy Gladstone, and Matt Carter for running and for their continual support of the charity."

The Friends of the BGH is a local charity run by volunteers to raise funds for vital equipment and services at the region's main hospital.

An appeal is already being made for anyone wishing to support the fundraising by taking part in next year's Great North Run.

And their online fundraising page is still open for donations, at www.justgiving.com/BBA2020
