A CREATIVE couple from Galashiels are enjoying a cinematic celebration to mark their tenth anniversary.

Roger Simian and Sarahjane Swan came to light as a partnership a decade ago with their scintillating soundtracks.

Roger, a former guitarist and songwriter with Dawn of the Replicants, and sculptor Sarahjane produced several radio-friendly singles under the guise of The Bird and The Monkey.

But a fascination for moving images to accompany their music began to overtake the songwriting.

Over the years they have developed their independent film-making craft - regularly picking up accolades and awards for their shorts as well as their thought-provoking art installations.

To mark ten years of Super 8 success, Sarahjane and Roger released perhaps their finest five minutes to date, Boy and the Sea.

Featuring their son Nico at Ayr beach, the short film was shot on vintage equipment and processed in their Galashiels kitchen using household ingredients.

And the finished feature is a stunning reminiscent journey into seaside holidays as well as being a transfixing study into innocent wonder.

Boy and the Sea premiered last weekend on Edinburgh's Portobello Promenade as part of the Art Walk Port festival.

And comes just a few weeks after they received the red-carpet treatment at the Edinburgh International Film Festival for earlier works.

Roger and Sarahjane's latest film has now been selected for the Edinburgh Short Film Festival which runs later this autumn, and it will also be screened at the Västerås Film Festival in Sweden, at the University of Tampa in the USA, the North Bellarine Film Festival in Australia, and the International Video Poetry Festival in Greece.

If the success of Boy and the Sea wasn't enough, the couple's other recent work, Ghost Worlds, has just received its world premier at West London's Portobello Film Festival.

Sarahjane said: "We were represented at opposite ends of the UK, pretty much simultaneously.

"On one of the days that Boy and the Sea has its Art Walk Porty screening in Portobello, Edinburgh, the Portobello Film Festival in West London gave our 25 minute film, Ghost Worlds (Animal Rites), its world premiere."

While the couple are set for some globe-trotting later this year, it is closer to home where they feel they have finally made it as film-makers.

Not only did they receive awards at the recent Edinburgh International Film Festival, they were also rubbing shoulders with big screen royalty.

Roger explained: "This year we're having a pretty strong presence in Auld Reekie.

"As well as Art Walk Porty, we had a short film accepted for EIFF's Walk With Us project back in June.

"This involved a special screening at the Filmhouse on the final day of Edinburgh International Film Festival, which was an edited composite of work by several Scottish filmmakers, including us.

"As part of this, we were both awarded our first gongs by the event's sponsors, Johnny Walker - two gold statuettes of the Walking Man in his top hat plus a personalised bottle each of Walkers' Black Label. "We were also invited to the red carpet screening of Mrs Lowry and Son, starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave, and then the End of Festival Gala Party.
