EARLSTON Horticultural Society held its annual show recently.

Taking place in the primary school's hall, the event was well supported by both spectators and exhibitors.

Graeme Wilson from the group told us: "Despite the mixed weather this summer, the show saw particularly fine displays of cut flowers in gladioli, dahlias and begonias with exhibitors travelling from as far afield as Newcastle to compete.

"The vegetable classes were also well contested this year, with fine displays. The floral art classes were also well supported, with imaginative displays – including a very popular 'arrangement in a stiletto'. In the industrial and photographic sections, the high standard of entries again caused the Judges much deliberation.

"The children from Earlston Primary School also provided a fine display of geranium pot plants which they had raised at home over the summer, from 'plug' plants provided by the society."

The chairman, George Goodfellow, opened proceedings and thanked both exhibitors and the public for their support in attending.

While the prizes were presented by the Vanna Barlow, who was presented with a basket of flowers on behalf of the society.

Mr Wilson added: "There was also a presentation of flowers to the out-going president of the society, Kay Brownlie, who was warmly thanked for her committed work over the last five years.

"The closing vote of thanks to all the society’s patrons, sponsors and many helpers was proposed by Jack Greer, vice-chairman of the Earlston Horticultural Society."
