BAKERY chain Greggs have been slammed for leaving a mess in a prominent Galashiels street.

The fast-food outlet moved across town last month.

And while the new, larger premises on Market Street have been welcomed, there has also been criticism for the condition of the former store in Channel Street.

Local councillor Euan Jardine has hit out.

He told us: "I am really disappointed at the way Greggs have left their old shop front.

"There is no getting around the fact that they have created an eye sore in the town.”

We contacted Greggs earlier this week, but bosses have yet to provide an official response to the criticism.

Councillor Jardine is now taking his concerns to the local authority's enforcement officers.

He added: "The new Greggs store looks fantastic there is no denying that but because many people have raised this with me there certainly is some animosity towards the company for what has happened.

“I have spoken to the council's building enforcement team.

"They will be looking into this and contacting the relevant parties.

"I do hope for a positive solution on this and hopefully some lessons will be learned for the future.”
