A PROJECT to improve access on the Eildon Hills has been completed.

The scheme saw four kilometers of upland paths repaired – in a bid to enhance visitor experience at the popular site.

The work was funded though the Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

And tourism bosses are delighted with the results.

VisitScotland chief executive Malcolm Roughead said: "I was delighted to be able to visit the iconic Eildon Hills to see first-hand the positive impact that the Scottish Government Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund is making to communities across the country.

"The Eildon Hills are popular with local walkers as well as those from further afield wishing to discover and experience great walking and fantastic scenery.

"Due to the continued success of tourism, it is crucial that we address those pinch points already identified and future-proof those areas where demand is growing. This fund is a crucial step towards ensuring that the tourism infrastructure meets current and future demand.

"Tourism is more than a holiday experience – it is the heartbeat of the Scottish economy and touches every community, generating income, jobs and social change."

Scottish Borders Council secured a total £102,178 from the fund, to carry out the improvements.

The paths have been repaired and the surrounding area has been spruced-up.

Councillor Mark Rowley, SBC’s executive member for business and economic development, said: "The Scottish Borders is renowned for its outdoor pursuits, from walking, road cycling and mountain biking to fishing and golf, and our local economy is heavily reliant on the tourism connected to them and associated events.

"Hundreds of walkers use the paths around and over the Eildons every week and this funding has enabled significant improvements which will protect these routes for many years to come.

"We were delighted to welcome Mr Roughead to the region to see for himself the work and investment both the public sector and many tourism businesses are putting in to making the Scottish Borders a must-visit destination for visitors from across the UK and abroad."
