PLANS have been unveiled for almost doubling the size of a popular Selkirk restaurant.

The Waterwheel Restaurant at Philiphaugh opened 12 years at the same time as a nearby salmon viewing centre.

Recent government funding for the creation of a golden eagle centre at the same site also included cash for extending the catering provision.

This week bosses at Philiphaugh Estate tabled plans for a new extension to the Waterwheel Restaurant - taking up the number of covers from 40 to 72.

As well as the cafe extension, the plans are also for new play equipment to be installed nearby and new signage for nearby attractions, including the Battle of Philiphaugh sites and a gin making distillery.

A spokesman said: "The main proposal consisted of an extension to the existing restaurant.

"The new extension will keep with this established aesthetic and provide 72 covers internally.

"A glazed cover will be provided to the existing external seating area.

"A new play area will be formed adjacent to the new extension and the field access will be relocated to the south end of the car park."

The full planning application will be considered over the coming weeks by Scottish Borders Council.
