MELROSE Parish Church is the venue for tuneful tour of the world like no other.

On Saturday (November 16) violinist Matthew Trusler and pianist Ashley Wass will circumnavigate the globe through music.

Inspired by the exploits of Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg, and 500 years after Magellan began his expedition to sail around the world, their collection of carefully chosen works vividly capture the spirit of each country visited along the way.

Beginning and ending - like Mr. Fogg - in England, the programme features an eclectic mix of styles and composers, from substantial masterpieces such as Debussy’s violin sonata, Tartini’s ‘Didone abbandonata’ and Prokofiev’s 5 Melodies, to popular lollipops by Kreisler, Piazzolla, Elgar and Gershwin.

Each work is powerfully evocative of a specific location, whether it’s the mountains of China, the salons of Vienna, a village scene in eastern Europe or the sun-kissed beaches of Brazil.

Since graduating from the Philadelphia, Matthew Trusler has earned a reputation as one of Britain’s leading violinists, performing with many of the world’s great orchestras, and receiving huge critical acclaim for his diverse recordings.

He has also founded the record label Orchid Classics on which some of the most important artists of today are recording, and the Lenny Trusler Children’s Foundation, which raises money for desperately ill babies.

Matthew was instrumental in forming the Malmö International String Festival, and was in 2012 appointed a director of Delange Artists Management, based in Amsterdam.

Ashley Wass, a Royal Academy of Music scholar, won the International London Piano Competition as well as being a Leeds Piano Competiton prizewinner. He is renowned for his broad and eclectic repertoire and has received great acclaim for his recordings of music from a wide range of styles and eras.

The musicians, having travelled the world for over two decades as performers, compiled this exploration of music’s unique power to both promote national identity and transcend boundaries in an entertaining and enriching voyage of discovery.

Around the World in 80 Minutes take place in Melrose Parish Church Hall on Saturday, November 16, starting at 7.30pm,

Tickets, priced at £15 and free for accompanied school age children, are available on the door.
