A TWEEDBANK Brownie has been praised by Asda Galashiels general manager, Ewan Carrigan, for writing to him about the shop's use of single-use plastic in its café.

Lily Webster was left disappointed after finding plastic straws in the Asda Galashiels café packaged in more plastic.

The nine-year-old felt so strongly about the waste of plastic, she hand wrote a letter to the shop's general manager asking him to make a change.

Mr Carrigan replied to Lily, thanking her for her hard work and dedication to reducing the use of single-use plastic.

And because of Lily's letter, Asda Galshiels Café no longer uses plastic straws, only paper ones. Mr Carrigan adding in his letter: "It was a great suggestion and was such a simple thing to do, we decided to do it straight away."

As a token of thanks, Lily was gifted a reusable water bottle, an Asda 'I Do The Right Thing' badge and a £10 Asda gift-card.

Lily told us: "I wrote to Asda because I was disappointed they were using plastic straws that were also wrapped in more plastic!

"I felt it was important to write to Asda because I want to save the future generation.

"When I got the letter back from Asda I was happy. I thought it was a good response and I'm glad they done something about it."

For all of this week, November 18-24, Girlguiding Scotland are supporting the iWill Week. The campaign encourages young people to get involved in social action and making their voices heard.

This follows on from the Girlguiding Scotland project, #PlasticPromise last month. This ongoing project asked girls and young women to make changes in their lives to reduce the amount of single use plastic being used.

For her contribution, Lily chose to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles she used, so switched to a reusable bottle instead.

Lily's mum, Fiona, was so proud of the stand her daughter took against the plastic used by Asda, she told us: "For her age she is quite responsible.

"Obviously at Brownies they've been doing their Plastic Promise. It's really good what they're learning at Brownies and at school about it."

Lily's passion for the environment and reducing plastic has also influenced life at home. Fiona added: "It's kind of influenced our thoughts at home as well.

"We do recycle and she uses her reusable water bottle as well.

"She knows about recycling and things like that so she's quite responsible at home too."

Making a #PlasticPromise is open to everyone, with five different pledges to choose from. For more information on #PlasticPromise, visit plasticpromises.co.uk
