EDUCATION bosses in the Borders have welcomed the addition of two local high schools in the Sunday Times Top 50 listings.

Scored on the number of Advanced Higher, Higher and National 5 passes the newspaper published its findings each year.

Peebles High has risen in the chart from last year's position of 26 up to 22.

And Earlston High has made its way into the top 50 for the first time at number 40.

An education spokesperson said: “We welcome positive news about our schools and we’re proud of the achievements of our pupils and staff at Earlston and Peebles.

"There is a lot of good work going on right across the nine high schools in the Borders and it should be noted that there are a number of different ways of measuring the health and success of a school, with attainment results being only one.”

According to the Sunday Times table, which had Jordanhill High School at number one, 75 percent of Peebles High pupils gained five or more National 5 passes, 57 percent passed five or more Highers, and 21 percent gained two or more Advanced Highers.

At Earlston Higher 76 percent of pupils gained five or more National 5 passes, 48 percent achieved five or more Highers, and 20 percent were awarded two or more Advanced Highers.
