WATCH: Pupils gather in Galashiels for climate protest

The group of youngsters organised the protest in Cornmill Square.

And they were joined eco-conscious Borderers of all ages.

Ruby Finn, from Peebles High School, was among the organising group.

She said: "I have been to a couple of the strikes in Edinburgh and I really wanted to bring them to the Borders, because I feel like this is an area where the issue is not as well known.

"We want to make people aware of the climate crisis, because it is a big issue.

"It is great to see how many people care. We have people from different schools here such as Peebles and Jedburgh.

"The Eco-Committee at our school has been really involved and we have recently stopped using plastic bottles.

"But these are individual changes.

"It is good if one school does that, but we really need entire countries to make changes."

Protests were also taking place in the Market Square in Duns today.

While vigils are due to be held in Newtown St Boswells; Hawick; Melrose and in Peebles later.

Francine Hardwick, who was involved in the Galashiels protest, also used the gathering to urge Scottish Borders Council to call a climate emergency.

She said: "Well over half of the other regions in Scotland have already called a climate emergency.

"It would just raise the urgency of the issue, if they [council] declared an emergency.

"Im would make everyone react and would make us all much more prepared to do something about it.

"We are running out of time, but if a climate emergency is called, we can all start to work together now."
