THERE was plenty of festive fun for all the family in Galashiels on Saturday.

Locals and visitors descended on the town centre for the Christmas lights switch-on.

They had the chance to browse the many stalls which were set up in Bank Street; as well as enjoy some pop hits from Little Mix tribute band, Little Chix.

And members of Galashiels' Christmas Lights Committee were delighted that all their hard work paid dividends.

Anne Carrie from the group told us: "It was absolutely amazing for the town of Galashiels.

"The people and the businesses have supported us 100 per cent.

"We have been fundraising for months and people have volunteered their time. We could not have done it without them.

"We have also had the expertise of fantastic professionals to help us to put the lights up.

"We are overwhelmed with the kindness of people who helped make this event happen."

The day was a real family affair with activities on offer for all ages.

As well as the many stalls, there was also a visit from the Velvet Hall alpacas and musical entertainment from the Town Band, Ex-Service Pipe Band and Langlee Choir.

And at 5pm the lights were switched on in front of a large crowd in Bank Street Gardens by the Little Chix.

Anne added: "The ethos of the group was to create a free event for families and also revitalise and increase footfall in Galashiels town centre.

"We're hoping that this is the start of something that takes off year after year and just grows bigger and bigger.

"We are very pleased with the market stalls. We took a long time to try and source stalls.

"Their offering has been fantastic and I think the traders have enjoyed the day. We are now going to get feedback to see how we can improve next year.

"We would also like to thank Scottish Borders Council. They have supported us in terms of Localities Bid Funding, their expertise in regards to the lighting and generally just a real willingness to be part of it and help the town enjoy this day."
