POLICE Scotland have again warned people to stay away from Peebles High School.

The site of last week's fire is now secured and equipped with security staff, CCTV and has regular police patrols.

Despite this, Lothians and Borders Police have received reports of people on the school site or interfering with the fencing in place.

Local Area Commander Chief Inspector Stuart Reid said: “I cannot stress enough how dangerous this area is just now and the fencing has been put up for everyone’s safety.

"People should stay away from the area and we will be carrying out patrols to reinforce this message.

"Anyone caught within the school or tampering with the fence will be dealt with appropriately.

"The school is out of bounds, and I would ask anyone who witnesses anyone in the grounds to call us at the time on the 101 number, or 999 if it is an emergency.”

SBC Chief Executive, Tracey Logan, added: "It is extremely dangerous for anyone to come close to, or try and enter, any part of the school.

"I cannot stress enough how important it is to remain well clear of the school site at this time.

“I understand that people are keen to get back their belongings that may have been left behind during the evacuation. I can assure everyone that we are working on arrangements."

As work continues at the site, SBC have reiterated their thanks to the emergency services and the community for their support in the wake of the fire.

Councillor David Parker, Convener of SBC, said: “Without the magnificent efforts of firefighters, it could have been significantly worse in terms of damage to the school estate.

“During and in the aftermath of this challenging incident, the community of Peebles has also stepped forward to support the emergency services and the school.

“On behalf of the Council, I thank all who have provided generous support during this extremely difficult incident for Peebles community.”
