A 49-year-old Dalkeith woman who admitted shoplifting in Galashiels has been fined £100 and ordered to pay £75 compensation.

Shona Waugh of James Lean Avenue, pleaded guilty at Selkirk Sheriff Court to stealing clothing from Marks and Spencers on January 16.

Fiona Hamilton, prosecuting, told the court that the offence happened at around 4.30pm when the accused was seen entering the premises.

Waugh went into the changing rooms and then left the shop without paying for items.

She was spotted by shop workers and following a quick check it was noticed items valued between £100 and £200 were missing.

There was no recovery of the clothing.

Waugh's lawyer admitted there was a theft from the shop by his client and the figure she gave for the value of the clothing was £100.

He said: "She was not contacted by the police until a few months later."
