RECYCLING bosses will attempt to empty their bins in Selkirk before the bells.

With the town's recycling centre due to close for several days over Christmas and New Year, Souters are left with only three options for dropping off their bottles.

But the recycling banks at Sainsbury's car park and the Police Station car park are both close to capacity - and the Rugby Club car park is already overflowing.

One angry resident told us: "Christmas and New Year are the busiest times for people buying and depositing bottles.

This isn't encouraging people to recycle.

"Surely, the bottle banks should be emptied regularly - the ones at the rugby club have been full since the summer."

When the Border Telegraph contacted Scottish Borders Council this week, officers confirmed they would try to organise a collection as soon as was possible.

And they are encouraging everyone to use the alternative sites until the uplift is completed.

A spokesman said: "We will follow up the report of full bottle banks at Philiphaugh car park in Selkirk.

“There are four locations with bottle banks in Selkirk including Sainsburys car park, the car park alongside the town’s police station and within the community recycling centre on Riverside Road.

“We would encourage the public to continue to help the environment by using bottle banks to recycle their glass over the festive period."
