THE String Jam Club opens its 23rd year next week with the highly-acclaimed Scottish trad duo of Ryan Young and Jenn Butterworth.

Ryan leads the New Wave of traditional Scottish fiddlers, according to the BBC, bringing new and exciting ideas to the folk genre.

He holds both a first class honours and a Masters degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, as well as being a twice a finalist in both the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards and the BBC Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year.

He was nominated for the Horizon Award at the 2018 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and was the winner of Folking.com Best Musician for 2018.

Despite his comparatively young years, Ryan is already on his way to becoming a folk giant.

And while his CV is fairly impressive, the superb guitarist who will be accompanying him at the County Hotel has just as extraordinary a background.

Jenn Butterworth was Musician of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2019, and is one of only four musicians shortlisted for Musician of the Year Award at the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2019.

Based in Glasgow, she is a lynchpin of the vibrant and thriving Scottish folk scene, performing regularly with a wide range of artists including her own projects, Jenn Butterworth & Laura-Beth Salter, and the fabulous Kinnaris Quintet.

Jenn is a highly recognised teacher with a wide range of experience, and was recently awarded Tutor of the Year at the 2015 Scots Trad Music Awards.

She is lecturer in Practical Studies in the Traditional Music Department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and a regular member of the teaching staff for Glasgow Fiddle Workshop.

Ryan and Jenn were nominated as Folk Band of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards, and were the only UK artists to be selected to perform at the Womex Expo 2019.

String Jam promoter Allie Fox said: "They gave a simply awe-inspiring performance at String Jam Club last year and are back by popular demand.

"The music was exhilarating, magical, and exciting, nearly causing a riot after the first set of tunes.

"They got two standing ovations and three encores, and the atmosphere was so exciting that we just had to book them again. This will be an inspirational gig and an unbelievable display of exceptional trad musicianship."

Tickets for Ryan Young and Jenn Butterworth at the String Jam Club on Saturday, January 11, priced at £14, are available online from Eventbrite, in person from the County Hotel or by phone 07930-872033.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.
