A JOINER who admitted driving while almost four times the legal limit on the morning of New Year's Day has been banned from the road for 16 months at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Adam Nairn from Galashiels collided with a roundabout verge on the A6091 road near Tweedbank at around 6.30am and his vehicle ended up in a field.

The 30-year-old had left the scene by the time police had arrived but when officers caught up with him he gave a breath/alcohol reading of 85 microgrammes - the legal limit being 22.

Nairn's lawyer said his client could not provide an explanation on why he had decided to drive the car after being out earlier celebrating the New Year.

Sheriff Raymond McMenamin said that was a matter of concern as Nairn must have known and he would have been over the alcohol limit and he had left the scene of an accident.

Nairn of Kilnknowe Place, was fined £600 and banned from driving for 16 months.
