THE Green Party in the Borders is backing independence.

At last weekend's AGM in St Boswells the Borders branch of the Scottish Green Party tied their saltire colours to the mast.

The group welcomed several new members during the meeting.

And the AGM was followed by the launch of the Green Yes independence campaign.

Branch co-convenor Barbra Harvie said: "Independence will give us a chance to build a truly democratic Scotland, one based on the principles of peace, equality and respect for our planet.

"A large majority of Borders residents voted to remain in the European Union in 2016.

"Independence will provide us with a route back to EU membership as well as the powers we need to tackle the climate and nature emergencies in our own country."
