COMMUNITY councillors in Selkirk are demanding action is taken to prevent a crumbling wall collapsing.

For the past two or three years concerns have been raised with local authority members over the condition of the Dunsdale Road wall.

Stones and pointing have broken away over the past two winters leaving increasingly large holes.

And fears are growing that entire sections will soon tumble onto the road.

Community councillor Ian King said: "We can expect a collapse sooner or later if nothing is done.

"It took some prodding just to get Scottish Borders Council to look at it.

"I'm not sure what we have to do to get them to repair it."

At a previous meeting of Selkirk Community Council, SBC member Gordon Edgar revealed that talks had started with three different landowners over the state of the roadside wall.

But councillor King doesn't believe there is enough time for negotiations.

He added: "If the owners of the land behind the wall aren't responding then it is up to Scottish Borders Council to carry out the repairs and make the situation safe.

"What happens after that is between the council and the landowners."

Dunsdale Road is a key route connecting the town's industrial area and riverside with the rest of Selkirk.

And it is also a through road from the A7 to the Ettrick and Yarrow valleys.

Selkirk Community Council chair Alistair Pattullo said: "If the wall collapses, it is unimaginable the damage it will do."
