AS substitutes go, Hawick Music Club have called up a match winner.

Following the late call-off by the Spencer Strachan Duo, due to family commitments in America, the February concert was hanging in the balance.

But the delightful duo of Laura Sergeant and Christopher Baxter have stepped in to fill the void.

And they have been burning the midnight oil in preparing a sensational programme for music lovers to enjoy.

Laura, originally from Lambert, and Christopher, originally from Aberdeen, stepped in with only three weeks to spare.

Vanda Mercer from Hawick Music Club said: "We can hope to enjoy core cello and piano sonata repertoire - Beethoven-Sonata in A major. Opus 69, Shumann-Fantasiestucke. Opus 73, Boulanger-3 Pieces, amongst others."

Laura regularly tours with the Sinopia Quartet who performed a sumptuous concert in Hawick during an earlier season.

She works as a chamber musician, orchestral and period instrument player and studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Hochshule fur Kunste in Breman, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Laura was also a member of the European Youth Orchestra and has played at festivals including the Pacific Music Festival Sapporo the Singapore Friendship Festival and Greenwich International String Quartet Festival.

Christopher is in constant demand as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician.

Recent performances include recitals throughout the UK and at international festivals in France and Italy as well as recitals in South Korea and Singapore.

He began his music studies at Aberdeen City Music School and continued at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Laura and Christopher will play for the Hawick Music Club on Sunday, February 23 from 2.30pm.

Tickets, priced at £12 for adults and free for Under 18s, are available from 01450 870514.
