MUSIC lovers can finally prepare for a bit of travel at this month's Melrose Music Society Concert.

Violinist Martin Trussler and pianist Ashley Wass were due to perform Around the World in 80 minutes in November.

But due to a burglary, which resulted in one of the musicians having their car and other belongings stolen, the concert was cancelled at the last minute.

Martin and Ashley will finally arrive at Melrose Parish Hall on Sunday (February 23) to delight the Parish Church Hall audience.

Around the World in 80 Minutes includes an eclectic mix of styles and composers, from substantial masterpieces such as Debussy’s violin sonata, Tartini’s ‘Didone abbandonata’ and Prokofiev’s 5 Melodies, to popular lollipops by Kreisler, Piazzolla, Elgar and Gershwin.

"Each work is powerfully evocative of a specific location, whether it’s the mountains of China, the salons of Vienna, a village scene in eastern Europe or the sun-kissed beaches of Brazil.

The following Sunday (March 1) Melrose Music Society will continue its concert season with Across the Pyrenees: French and Spanish Music for the Saxophone.

The concert, generously sponsored by the Tunnell Trust, will give the audience an exciting and colourful exploration of the cultural sympathy and musical styles of the two countries on either side of the Pyrenees.

Saxophonist Jonathan Radford studied at Cheetham’s School of Music and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Claude Delangle, graduating in 2017 with a Masters Degrees with distinction in both saxophone and chamber music.

Passionate about chamber music, Jonathan is a co-founder of the Yendo Quartet which regularly broadcasts on Radio France.

Praised for his ‘exceptional musicianship and emotive playing’ he is the 2018 Royal Overseas League Music Competition Gold Medallist and first prize winner. Pianist Eleanor Kornas, from Derbyshire, graduated with a First Class Honours Music degree from Cambridge University, and she was an Adami Award Junior Fellow in Piano Accompaniment at the Royal College of Music. She now works as a Staff Accompanist at Cheetham’s School of Music having performed as a soloist and accompanist both in the UK and internationally.

The French side of their programme includes works by Milhaud, Caplet, Lauba, Fauré, Maurice and Borne, the last piece a ‘Fantasie’ based on melodies taken from Bizet’s Carmen opera. The Spanish side is represented by music of Manuel de Falla and Pedro Iturralde.

Tickets for both concerts, priced at £15 for adults and free for accompanied school-age children, will be available at the door.

Both concerts will start at 3pm in Melrose Parish Church Hall.
