A Duns woman who admitted receiving £18,500 in benefits she was not entitled to has been placed on a night time home curfew for the next 10 months.

Fifty nine year old Carole Lindsay will need to stay in her home at Lintlaw Farm Cottages between the hours of 7pm and 7am following the sentence at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

She pleaded guilty to failing to notify the Department of Work and Pensions about a change in her circumstances that her mobility had improved and she was self-employed while still getting £18,500 in Personal Independent Payments.

The offence happened at her home and also at Galashiels Job Centre between October 2014 and March 2018.

Sheriff Peter Paterson told the first offender that the offence was above the custody threshold and merited a jail sentence but in light of the Scottish Government's policy of a presumption against short term prison sentences he imposed a Restriction of Liberty Order as an alternative.
