TESCO have vowed to keep their Galashiels lift out of operation until a full inspection is carried out.

The announcement comes after customers were stuck in the elevator for more than two hours on Wednesday.

Among the trapped shoppers was an elderly pensioner.

Fire crews were called to the store at 11.12am but it took until nearly 2pm before the shoppers were finally released.

An ambulance was also in attendance.

Following the release of the shoppers, a spokesman for Tesco told us: "We’re extremely sorry this happened and are pleased that our customers are now out of the lift.

"We’re grateful to the emergency services who were on site quickly and were able to resolve this.

"We won’t be opening the lift again until we’re completely confident it is working properly.”
