A thug convicted of severely injuring a baby girl to danger of her life following a jury trial will have until next month to learn his punishment.

Twenty three year old Nathan Brown had denied hitting the two-month old child in the face and repeatedly shaking her at a house in Jedburgh in July 2018.

But he was convicted by a majority verdict at Edinburgh Sheriff Court earlier this month.

His lawyer claimed that Brown had dropped the youngster, said to have needed emergency brain surgery afterwards, by accident.

Sentencing of Brown, formerly of Eildon Road in Hawick, was due to take place at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Friday) but has been deferred until Friday, March 13, for the contents of a Criminal Justice Social Work Report to be considered.

Brown, who was jailed for 18 months for assault on a woman and endangering her life in December 2018, was remanded in custody.
