AN event is being held in Galashiels to encourage more same sex couples to adopt.

The St Andrew’s Children’s Society will be at the MacArts tomorrow (Thursday) from 6pm until 8pm.

The drop-in is being run as part of the LGBT+ Adoption and Fostering Week.

Adoptions by same sex couples in Scotland became possible in 2009.

Susan Hart, chairwoman of Scottish Borders LGBT Equality, said: “It has been just over 10 years since the Adoption and Children Act gave LGBT adopters the same legal rights as heterosexual adopters and just under 10 years since the Equality Act made it illegal to discriminate against LGBT people looking to foster or adopt yet some LGBT people still think they cannot do either.

“Scottish Borders LGBT Equality are therefore very happy to be actively supporting St Andrew’s Children’s Society in holding an informative evening for LGBT people interested in adoption and fostering.

“This is the first event of its kind in the Scottish Borders and we hope that many people will join us to dispel the myths and receive information and advice.”
