ONE of Galashiels' best-loved businesses has come up with the recipe for a successful future.

While many other family-run stores have struggled in recent times due to changes in shopping habits, baker Alex Dalgetty & Sons is not only surviving but looking ahead with confidence.

The historic company's Bank Street store has just re-opened following a four-week major refurbishment.

Master baker Craig Murray, who is the fifth-generation owner, believes it is vital to carry on the tradition of taking an innovative approach to running the business.

And he revealed that the refit is the conclusion of a project which was two years in the planning.

He told us: "It’s important to me that not only are our products unique, but customers have a unique experience when they visit.

"The aim of the refurbishment was to create an environment quite unlike any other bakers’ shop, offering an experience that mirrored the artisanal approach the team from Dalgetty’s take when baking all of our products from scratch in our Island Street bakery.

“I firmly believe that this shop is now a true reflection of the quality, time and workmanship that goes into every product that we make."

The extensive refurbishment included natural clay walls being introduced with copper worksurfaces being added to the new sculpted solid oak shelving.

New subtle lighting has also been fitted to allow the business to showcase the products to their maximum.

Customer Kenny Wilson is delighted with the new look of his favourite bakers'.

He said: "I’ve been a customer of Dalgetty’s for years and wasn’t sure what to expect following the refurbishment, but it’s outstanding.

"You’d not believe it was the same shop as you are now hit with a total sensory experience as soon as you walk through the door.”
