HUNDREDS of pieces of furniture and equipment from schools in Jedburgh are being made available for re-use, as part of the national Pass it on Week campaign.

And local community groups and charities as well as householders are invited to take home a desk, noticeboard or even a lathe.

As pupils from both Jedburgh Grammar and one remaining primary are about to head for the new Community Campus, they are leaving behind classrooms full of equipment and furniture.

Other schools in the Borders have been given first-pick of the thousands of items being made available.

But everything left over at Jedburgh Grammar and Howdenburn Primary will be made available.

Councillor Sandy Aitchison, chair of the new sustainable development committee, said: “Pass it on Week is dedicated to encouraging people to get involved in re-use activity of all shapes and sizes, including swapping, repairing, upcycling or buying second hand.

“Through offering furniture from the Grammar School and Howdenburn Primary, we are contributing to the circular economy, which is vital to reducing our carbon footprint and emissions.

“We hope as many of these items of furniture can be reused in whatever way possible and would encourage Borderers to get involved in Pass it on Week to help save themselves money and the environment.”

With children set to move to the new Jedburgh Grammar Campus next month, a variety of items from the current Grammar School and Primary will be surplus to requirements.

Items on offer include chairs and desks of various sizes and type, lockers, cabinets, noticeboards, shelving, plastic trays, tall stools, drawer units, benches, woodwork machinery and PE equipment.

Viewing days have been arranged for Jedburgh-based community groups at Jedburgh Grammar on Saturday, March 21, 9am to 12noon.

Borders-wide groups and members of the public will be invited to the same school on Saturday, March 28, 9am to 12noon.

All groups and members of the public are invited to Howdenburn on Friday, March 20 between 2pm and 4pm.

Both schools will also be open for further viewing on Monday and Tuesday, April 6 and 7, between 9am and 4pm.

Councillor Gordon Edgar, SBC’s energy efficiency champion, added: “We all need to think more about the circular economy and conserving existing resources is one of the easiest ways to make a difference.

“This is a great initiative with the items on offer from Jedburgh Grammar and Primary schools ideal for reusing in various ways.”

Anyone interested in picking up any items is asked to complete a short note of interest form by Thursday, March 19 at www.scotborders.gov.uk/PassItOnWeek
