RESIDENTS in Peeblesshire are reacting with anger at sightings of lockdown rules being broken.

Drunken youths are allegedly among the disobedient minority, with claims that teenagers have been setting fires and blaring music in woodland.

Meanwhile, the spectacle of three drunken revellers at Rosetta Road in Peebles last Wednesday enraged a local resident.

The witness, who asked not to be named, said: “What do people not understand about lockdown? Please, for the love of whatever God you believe in, stay at home for a few weeks otherwise we will have to suffer for longer.”

The witness said the youths were playing around with a Tesco trolley near Halyrude Primary School while "staggering" through drunkenness.

“I couldn’t give a good description of the people or where they were going," said the resident, who added he did not contact the authorities.

"I thought the police would be too stretched with everything going on," he said.

The same source claims four young boys were last week sitting in the trolley bay of Sainsbury’s. He added: “I alerted staff and asked them to move on as we're in lockdown but it seems the youths don’t care.”

Meanwhile, a Peebles mum was aghast to see a group of six teenagers cycling at speed on Monday evening.

They tore through Hay Lodge Park before heading over Fotheringham Bridge, said the woman – who claims her family narrowly escaped injury.

“My boys and I had to back up the bridge to avoid being hit," said the woman, who watched as the hooded cyclists then split up, one half going in the direction of South Parks, while the rest aimed for the viaduct.

“It’s the parents I’m more disappointed in," said the mum. "They must be aware that their son is not in the house self-isolating like they’re meant to be doing.”

In a direct plea to parents, she added: “Please let your child know about social distancing.”

Later that evening another resident heard music blaring from woodland in the park and then watched as teenagers stood around a fire.

Last Friday, firefighters were called out to a blaze which was started in Pirn Wood, Innerleithen.

A resident asked the local community council to highlight the incident which was alleged to have been started by three youths.
