KEY workers in the Borders who are self-isolating can now be tested for coronavirus in Galashiels.

A centre at Netherdale car park is open from today (May 1) until May 5.

The facility, run by the military, will allow key workers who are displaying symptoms to be tested for the virus, with family members also eligible if they live under the same roof.

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) says the site poses no threat to the public, adding that all equipment will be removed at the end of each day.

SBC chief executive Tracey Logan said: "I am delighted that we have managed to work with partners to quickly put in place plans to provide drive-through testing for key workers in the Scottish Borders.

"I’d urge any key worker who is self isolating, either because they themselves have symptoms of COVID-19 or because a member of their household is, to book tests."

Testing is open to four priority groups, with those in Priority Group One already having access to NHS testing facilities.

Priority Group Two includes "essential workers in critical national infrastructure fundamental for safety and security, and life-line services"; Priority Group Three includes "staff directly involved in delivering other essential services"; and Priority Group Four is for "staff involved in volunteering, or in nationally or locally significant industry important to economic sustainability and growth".

Key workers should visit this website to book their slot at the centre, which has been set up to support the UK Government's testing programme.
