FARMERS will have to wait until next year for the 100th staging of a Borders agricultural show.

Organisers of Yarrow & Ettrick Pastoral Society Show have taken the decision to cancel the 2020 edition.

The society's secretary Alison Renwick said the committee "felt duty-bound" to call off the showpiece.

She added: “This year’s show would have been particularly memorable, as committee members had already started working on a number of special projects to commemorate the 100th staging.

“These plans will, of course, now be carried over to the 2021 event and I’m very confident next year’s show will prove every bit as successful as this year’s would have been.”

Although the first show staged by the Yarrow & Ettrick Pastoral Society took place in September, 1906, the society’s origins stretch back 100 years prior to that with the formation of the Selkirk Farmer Club (also known as the Selkirkshire Farmers Club).

The new society’s formation came after a public meeting was held in the Gordon Arms in May, 1906, to "consider the desirability of forming a society for the purpose of organising an annual show of sheep and cattle".

Descendants of farmers present at that inaugural meeting continue to live and work in the Yarrow and Ettrick Valleys, thereby helping to keep alive the traditions and high standards which have become the hallmark of the society’s past 99 shows.

The organisers added: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with Yarrow Show, including all volunteers, sponsors, traders, exhibitors and public, whose support is essential to the future of the show.

"The society looks forward to welcoming you back next year."
