HAWICK Common Riding Committee has introduced Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby to the town’s traditions.

The presenters of This Morning will make an appearance during a series of online concerts replacing the annual festival.

The first virtual show takes place on May 28, on what would have been Chase Night.

Performer Ben McCredie, 16, said: “It’s always a great honour to take part in the common riding and this year is certainly different, but I was delighted to be asked to take part in the virtual concert.”

The concerts – featuring historical footage as well as local singing talents – will be streamed on the Hawick Common Riding Facebook page.

Common riding chairman John Hogg said: “Nothing can replace our common riding celebrations, but the common riding committee felt compelled to mark our common riding nonetheless in a safe and appropriate manner.”

The ex-cornet added: “You’ll hear songs from the wealth of talent we are so lucky to call our own, both young and not so young alike.

“There will also be guest appearances from local dignitaries and a host of other events.”

The other concerts will be held on June 3 (Overseas Night) and June 4 (Colour Bussing), with featured footage edited by ITV videographer Ronald Yule – a former Hawick High School pupil.
